How to Use Advanced Custom Fields & Assets in Your Website

Advanced Custom Fields and Assets allow you to create custom content types beyond standard blog posts. This is useful for review sites, directories, portfolios, and any website with repeating content structures.

1. Understanding Custom Asset

In the builder, blog posts are actually assets that use dynamic fields. You can create your own custom assets with unique fields tailored to your needs.

Examples of Custom Assets

  • Movie Reviews (with fields for posters, release year, and ratings)
  • Real Estate Listings (with property images, price, and location)
  • Job Listings (with job title, company, and application link)

2. Creating a Custom Asset

  1. Open the CMS Sidebar.
  2. Click on Custom > Create Custom Asset.
  3. Enter a Singular and Plural Name for your asset.
  • Example: Movie Review (singular) and Movie Reviews (plural).
  1. The Asset Slug will be auto-generated based on the name.
  2. Select an Icon to represent this asset in the CMS.

3. Adding Custom Fields to an Asset

After creating an asset, you can define custom fields to store unique data.

Adding an Image Field (Movie Poster)

  1. Click Add Field > Image.
  2. Name it Movie Poster.
  3. Set it as Required if necessary

Adding a Text Field (Release Year)

  1. Click Add Field > Text.
  2. Name it Release Year.
  3. Set a minimum and maximum length to ensure correct formatting.

Other Field Types Available

  • Rich Text – For long descriptions or summaries.
  • Email & Links – Useful for contact forms or external references.
  • Number Fields – Ideal for ratings, pricing, or numerical data.
  • Reference Fields – Used for categorizing content (e.g., linking movies to genres).
  • Multi-Reference Fields – Allows selecting multiple categories for one asset.

4. Creating Categories for Custom Assets

To categorize assets (e.g., movie genres):

  1. Go to Custom > Create Custom Asset.
  2. Name it Genre (e.g., Horror, Action, Drama).
  3. Click Create and Continue.

5. Linking Assets to Categories Using References

  1. Open Movies > Configuration Settings.
  2. Select Add Field > Reference.
  3. Under Reference, choose Genre.
  4. Click Save and Finish.

Now, when adding a new movie, you can assign it to a genre category.

6. Using Dynamic Fields in Templates

Once assets are created, they can be dynamically displayed using Dynamic Elements in your website layout.

  • Featured Image → Movie Poster
  • Title → Movie Title
  • Text → Release Year & Summary

By making the layout a Global Block, every new asset (e.g., movie review) will automatically follow the same structured design.

Benefits of Using Custom Assets & Fields

Scalable – Easily manage large amounts of structured data.

Dynamic – Automate content updates across pages using Dynamic Elements.
